Introduction/Story: Guided reading and comprehension
 

  1. Introduce the new topic of ‘Past and Present’. Discuss what these words might mean then give an explanation:
    - Past = something which has already happened.
    - Present = something happening
    at this very moment in time/it is happening right now (explain the misconception that ‘present’ doesn’t always mean a gift e.g. on their birthday).

    Also discuss what the future means.
    - Future =   something that will exist or happen in time to come.

     
  2. It will be useful to give personal examples to each child of their past, present and future.
    The example I will use in school:

    - Last week, we did not come to school because it was the half term holidays. This has already happened so it is in the past.
    - Today it is Monday and we have come back to school. You are sitting at your desks right now listening to me. This is the present as it is happening now.
    - Tomorrow will not be Monday anymore. It will be Tuesday. We have to go to sleep and wake back up for the new day to begin. Because it hasn’t happened yet it is in the future.

     
  3. Question: What has happened in your past? What will happen in your future? Give prompts where needed.
     
  4. Read ‘The-old-toy-room - Guided reading questions’. Pause when you see a question mark symbol and ask the corresponding question(s). Encourage the children to think of their own ideas and guide them to find the answer within the text where appropriate.

Understanding the world – History
Past and Present
Recap vocabulary ‘past’/’present’/’future’ from Literacy this morning.

Work through the ‘Past and Present - Technology-all-around-us’. Discuss the different forms of technology beginning with those now in the present time and then compare with technology from the past.

Complete the ‘Understanding the world-History - Past-and-present-sorting-activity’. Can the children explain why it is placed where and what informs their choice(s)? Use the ‘past-present-and-future- Display posters’ to support.
